Adjustment Dallas Mavericks must make in Game 6 vs. Suns: 3. Take care of the ball

The Mavericks committed the third-fewest turnovers in the NBA during the regular season at 12.5 per game, and that number dropped to 9.7 in the postseason coming into Game 5 when Dallas uncharacteristically had 16 turnovers, including 12 in the third quarter alone.

Turnovers lead to transition opportunities, and the Suns made them pay mightily on Tuesday evening. Dallas needs to limit the Suns' high-powered offense, but they cannot do that if Phoenix is running with numbers off giveaways.

The Mavericks have zero chance of winning Game 6 if they commit another 16 turnovers. Phoenix makes teams pay for mistakes, and Dallas cannot afford to make them if they want to continue their season.

Mikal Bridges had four steals in Game 5, and he wreaked havoc in the pivotal third quarter. Dallas cannot let him get going on Thursday night. Steals will lead to easy buckets in transition in a game where every point will matter.

The Mavs did not play with enough energy in Game 5, but they should have no issues finding that on their home floor. They must limit their turnovers to under ten if Dallas wants to have a chance to win. Expect Luka Doncic and Jalen Brunson to both do a better job at protecting the ball.
