Adjustment Dallas Mavericks must make in Game 6 vs. Suns: 5. Take 40 triples
This might not be an adjustment so much as adjusting back. Dallas averaged 44.8 3-pointers per game in the first four before attempting just 32 in Game 5. Luka Doncic and the Mavericks took too many pull-up triples and not enough overall on Tuesday night, and it was not a recipe for success as Dallas scored just 80 points.
The Mavs need to get up 40 3-pointers in Game 6 with 28-plus coming off catch and shoot attempts. Dallas averages 27.3 catch and shoot threes per game this postseason, and they are shooting 41.7 percent on those attempts.
Dallas needs Dorian Finney-Smith, Reggie Bullock, and Maxi Kleber all scoring in double figures, but that will not be possible unless they get up 3-pointers. Luka and Jalen Brunson must create shots and find the open teammate.
The Suns attempted a series-high 32 threes in Game 5, and the Mavericks need to run them off the line on Thursday night. Dallas must hold the edge in 3-pointers made if they want to win, so expect the Mavs to get up plenty of shots as they look to keep Phoenix inside the paint.
Getting up 40 3-pointers will not be easy for the Dallas Mavericks as the Suns plan on sticking to shooters and forcing Luka Doncic to beat them. The 23-year-old superstar can change that plan early if stays aggressive, and that should open up plenty of jumpers.
