The Dallas Mavericks signed JaVale McGee to be their starting center. They reached the conference finals last season, but they struggled to rebound and protect the rim in the postseason. Theoretically, McGee gave them a veteran presence with three championship rings that could control the paint and help solve those issues.

It has not worked out. McGee started six of the first seven games, and it quickly became clear that things were not working. The Mavs struggled on both ends of the floor, and McGee just did not fit. The seven-footer quickly dropped out of the rotation entirely. He has received more chances, but the results have been much of the same.

The signing has not worked out, and both sides would love to move on before the Feb. 9 trade deadline, but is there a market for McGee? Do the Mavericks have options on where to trade him? Here is a closer look.

Dallas Mavericks center JaVale McGee is a proven big man that should have suitors

McGee is a 14-year NBA veteran on his second stint in Dallas. The 34-year-old has been in the playoffs six of the last seven years, including winning three championships. He was on the Lakers' title-winning roster in 2020 and had a previous relationship with head coach Jason Kidd and many of the Mavericks staff members.

McGee is still an outstanding roll man that can rebound and protect the rim. He may not fit in the Mavericks' defensive scheme, but the seven-footer can still be productive in other places. There are multiple teams searching for a backup big man, but there is one thing that will water down their interest.
