Will the Dallas Mavericks regret the Kyrie Irving trade?

It is still too soon to give a definitive answer. If the Mavs get healthy, they could go on a run this season in the wide-open Western Conference that would lessen the sting of the trade. If Dallas wins a title with Luka and Kyrie, this trade instantly becomes a success. The Raptors do not regret trading for Kawhi Leonard, even though he stayed in Toronto for just one year.

It was a massive risk, though. History suggests the Mavericks will regret the trade. Kyrie Irving will leave in free agency or ask to be traded in a few years. If Luka Doncic leaves with him, which LeBron James and Kevin Durant previously did in two of Kyrie's three stops, this deal will instantly be a massive failure and one of the most regrettable moves in franchise history.

Luka and Kyrie could make this partnership work and build a dynamic duo that scares opponents for the next five years, but will they? Early returns have not been strong, but their roster is incomplete. If the Mavericks find a center, improve their rebounding, and add a few 3-and-D wings this summer, they could quickly become title contenders. No team would be eager to face that group in the playoffs.
