Losing Kyrie Irving could be the final straw before Luka Doncic requests a trade

Luka pushed the Mavs to trade for a second star. The 24-year-old is getting more involved in personnel decisions, and he wanted the front office to put more talent around him. They did just that. Irving was the best player that Dallas could have acquired with the assets they had.

It is now on Doncic and Kyrie to make it work. If it does not, that could be the thing that forces not only Irving but Luka out of Dallas.

Remember, Kristaps Porzingis was acquired to be number 77’s co-star during his rookie season, and that did not work out. It was not until Doncic’s fourth year and a new front office that they traded KP. If Irving lasts multiple years in Dallas, Luka will be nearing the end of his contract, and he won’t want to go back to being the team’s lone star player.

The Dallas Mavericks put themselves in this situation. It has been years of mismanagement that led them here. From the Porzingis trade to not re-signing Jalen Brunson at a discount to letting him walk in free agency, all those moves have added up over the years. It pushed them to trade for Kyrie and now they are pot committed to the results.
