Best remaining Dallas Mavericks buyout target: 1. Will Barton

Barton was primarily a starting wing for the Denver Nuggets where he averaged 14.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 0.9 steals in 30.4 minutes per game over seven-plus seasons. He was never a stout defender, but he could score and operate as a secondary playmaker.

Barton was traded to the Wizards in the offseason, and things did not work out in the nation’s capital. He played under 20 minutes per game, shot just 38.7 percent from the field, and his scoring dropped to just 7.7 points each night. Barton struggled to find a consistent role before agreeing to a buyout.

The Dallas Mavericks need someone capable of playing quality minutes on the wing, especially if they want to play small throughout the playoffs. Josh Green, Reggie Bullock, and Tim Hardaway Jr. are three options, but they cannot play all 48 minutes at two positions. Dallas is hoping Justin Holiday will fill minutes off the bench, but another option would not hurt.

The Mavs could waive Theo Pinson to sign Will Barton. The 32-year-old would add a bit more firepower off the bench and provide a needed secondary ball-handler and playmaker. Expect Barton to sign with a contender before March 1, so he is playoff-eligible.
