Dallas Mavericks 2023 New Year’s Resolution: 4. Win non-Luka minutes

The Mavs are the better team when Luka Doncic is on the floor in almost every game. They have outscored the opposition by 143 points in his 1,254 minutes so far. Doncic has currently scored the most points this season, and he is fourth in assists and fifth in steals. He has played like the MVP, but Dallas has struggled without number 77 on the floor.

The Mavericks' offensive rating is 121.3 with Luka on the floor, but it dips to 106.4 without him, according to PBP Stats. Their defensive rating drops from 115.8 to 110.0 without Doncic, but the Mavericks have a negative-3.6 net rating when Luka is on the bench. Their net rating is 5.4 with number 77 leading their charge.

24 of the Mavericks' 37 games have been classified as clutch by NBA Stats. They have to grind out wins every night, and head coach Jason Kidd is hesitant to take Luka Doncic off the floor because those are the minutes where the team falters. Playing even basketball without their superstar would help the Mavs secure a few more easy wins and lighten the gigantic workload on number 77.

One simple way to improve in the minutes without Luka Doncic is to fill a hole on their roster that has existed since the moment Jalen Brunson left for the Knicks in free agency.
