Will the Dallas Mavericks trade for a star to pair with Luka Doncic next summer?
The Mavs will be searching for the right deal. They will have to wait until after the 2023 NBA Draft is in the books, assuming their selection conveys to the New York Knicks from the original Kristaps Porzingis deal. Then, Dallas will have a full chest of their own draft picks to trade for a star player.
Fans should never bet on a team to acquire a star player unless there is already one on the trade blocks that wants to go there. It seems safe to say that Donovan Mitchell will eventually end up with the Knicks, but assuming any other team will land a star player is a stretch.
Dallas must outbid the 28 other teams when trading for a star player. They will only have their own first-round picks to do that. Several teams have a massive collection of selections, including ones they acquired from other teams. The Mavs will struggle to compete with those offers.
The Dallas Mavericks will continue to improve the roster around superstar Luka Doncic. Will they be able to trade for a star player? The front office will certainly try, and the Mavericks are one year away from having the flexibility to do so. Stay tuned to see how it shakes out.
