Dallas Mavericks have to trade for a star to pair with Luka Doncic: Will one be available?

There is always at least one marquee talent available via trade. At the deadline, James Harden went from Brooklyn to Philadelphia. Rudy Gobert and Dejounte Murray were traded this summer with Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell popping up on the trade block. Who will be next? Nobody knows, but there is always a star player to be had if the team can win the bidding war.

Gobert’s trade from Utah to Minnesota increased the price to acquire a star player. The Jazz extracted four first-round picks and one swap plus the just-selected Walker Kessler from the Timberwolves in the deal. That does not mention the veteran salary matchers that could net Utah even more draft capital. Danny Ainge plans to build through the draft, and the Jazz are likely to deal Donovan Mitchell for another massive haul of picks.

The star player has plenty of say in where he ends up. No team is trading for a top talent if he does not want to play there. Superstars can often force their way to a specific city, which makes trading for a star even more complicated.

The Dallas Mavericks will have a compelling package to trade, but will they land a star to pair with Luka Doncic in 2023?
