Thing Dallas Mavericks wish they could redo: 5. Drafting Josh Green
The Mavs held the 18th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and they had options. Dallas just lost in the first round of the playoffs to the LA Clippers for the first time, and they needed to upgrade their roster. There were talks of dealing the selection for a veteran role player, and rumors suggest the Mavericks attempted to trade up to draft Tyrese Haliburton. When those deals did not work out Dallas had to make a pick.
It was not president of basketball operations and GM Donnie Nelson that made the selection, but Bob Voulgaris, who took Josh Green. The 21-year-old has shown brief flashes in his first two NBA seasons, and he is a hard worker, but the Mavericks missed on this pick.
Fans wanted them to take Saddiq Bey or Desmond Bane, who have both showcased All-Star potential early in their NBA careers, but Dallas native Tyrese Maxey appears to have been the best player available. The 21-year-old could be a superstar and would be a fantastic fit next to Luka Doncic.
The Dallas Mavericks wish they could have this draft pick back, and they would prefer to have Bey, Bane, or Maxey. There is still time for Green to become the best player, but he would have to make a massive and unexpected leap to get there where Bane, Maxey, and Bey are likely to be All-Stars in the next five years.
