Dallas Mavericks position battle to watch during training camp: 2. Dinwiddie vs. THJ
Head coach Jason Kidd has already declared that Spencer Dinwiddie will start in the backcourt next to Luka Doncic, but this is another spot that Tim Hardaway Jr. will be looking to claim in training camp. THJ has embraced whatever role he has been asked to play during his time in Dallas, but he prefers to be in the starting five.
The Mavs had their most success last season with two ball-handlers on the floor. It prompted Jalen Brunson to move into the starting five, and the front office to trade Kristaps Porzingis for Dinwiddie. Dallas is light on ball-handling entering the 2022-23 season. They can start Dinwiddie next to Doncic in the backcourt, but coach Kidd will be forced to stagger their minutes.
There will be plenty of playing time for Tim Hardaway Jr., but coach Kidd needs to figure out his best role. If THJ is shooting 38-plus percent from 3-point range, he will be a key floor spacer and scorer whenever he is on the floor. The 30-year-old is fully healthy and ready to prove that he should play starters minutes on this squad.
Hardaway Jr. is not just battling Dinwiddie and Bullock for a starting job, but he is also fighting for a place in the closing lineup. It is nearly impossible to play over 30 minutes per game without being in the starting or finishing lineup, so these battles are something for fans to watch closely during training camp and into the regular season.
