The Dallas Mavericks drafted Trae Young with the fifth overall pick in 2018, but he was never headed to Texas. They worked out a deal with the Atlanta Hawks to move up to third to secure the services of Luka Doncic. It cost the Mavs a lottery pick in 2019 and forever linked the two All-Star players.

Both players quickly made their mark in the NBA. Luka and Young were both All-Stars in the second season, and they shared a viral moment during the Rising Stars game in 2020. Doncic is a three-time All-NBA selection, and Young has twice been an All-Star in his four seasons. They are two of the best playmakers on the planet, and they made be linked together again.

Rumors suggest that Ice Trae could request a trade this offseason, just as the Mavericks will have all their draft capital to acquire a second star. Here is a look at why Young could be the All-Star Dallas needs to build a title contender around number 77.

Dallas Mavericks fit Trae Young’s reasons for potentially requesting a trade

Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report cites Young’s desire to win and chemistry issues as reasons why the two-time All-Star point guard could request a trade in the offseason. He has clashed with head coach
(subscription required) Nate McMillan, and the team has struggled since reaching the conference finals in 2021.

The Mavericks reached the conference finals last season, and joining forces with Luka Doncic would immediately give Dallas the best backcourt duo in the league. Young is an elite shooter and floor spacer, who could take his game to another level playing off number 77.

The Mavs run to the conference finals was sparked by their chemistry. Jalen Brunson left for New York, but bringing in Trae Young could more than makeup for his loss. Young is the shot creator and playmaker Dallas desperately needs. He would also team up with head coach Jason Kidd, and the Hall of Fame point guard could help Ice Trae reach his peak.

The Dallas Mavericks fit what Trae Young is looking for if he requests a trade, and he fits the team’s needs as well.
