Should the Dallas Mavericks trade Tim Hardaway Jr. this offseason?
The Mavs should not just deal Hardaway Jr. to the highest bidder. They need to trade him in a deal that upgrades their roster. Dallas wants to build a title contender around Luka Doncic, and any trade should push them closer to that goal.
The Mavericks need talent, and they cannot afford to deal it away for lesser pieces. Fans will remember trading Seth Curry for Josh Richardson. The logic of the trade was sound, but Dallas ended up downgrading their roster. They need to avoid that pitfall in making a deal for Tim Hardaway Jr.
The Mavs are facing a potential hefty luxury tax bill if they re-sign Jalen Brunson. Owner Mark Cuban must be willing to pay that tab. Dallas cannot afford to salary dump a player like Tim Hardaway Jr. to save money. He would have given head coach Jason Kidd a seventh trusted rotation player in the postseason and improved the Mavericks' chances of winning on a nightly basis.
The front office should absolutely deal Tim Hardaway Jr. in a package for a second star. What they get in return is the key to any THJ trade this offseason. If it improves their roster, the Dallas Mavericks should 100 percent trade the 6’5 wing.
