Dallas Mavericks want to win now and Christian Wood helps them

Every Mavs discussion centers on Luka Doncic. The front office’s number one priority is building a title contender around the 23-year-old superstar. Doncic is a generational talent that is on pace to be an all-time great, and no team wants to be the one that forced him out of town because they could not build a winning roster around him.

The Mavericks were in the conference finals last season, and they have zero interest in taking a step backward this year. Luka is playing the best basketball of his career. He needs talent around him, and Dallas can make another deep postseason run.

This complicates the Christian Wood trade discussions just like it did with Jalen Brunson last season. The Mavs are unquestionably a better team with talented players, so trading them away for draft capital or a less player makes little sense. Finding a trade with a contending team where both sides improve their roster is rare, so the front office is in a bind.

Taking a short-term step backward to make a future leap may be the correct move, but try convincing Luka of that. He is one of the most competitive people on the planet. Number 77 wants to win now, and Christian Wood is helping the team do that.
