How can the Dallas Mavericks unlock Tim Hardaway Jr. this season?

THJ thrived in coach Carlisle’s five-out system that preached shots at the rim or beyond the 3-point line. His shots at the rim have declined steadily as his career has progressed, but Carlisle curtailed his long twos, which significantly improved his shooting efficiency.

Head coach Jason Kidd’s system is significantly less rigid as players have more freedom to attack where they see fit. If 14-plus percent of Hardaway’s shots come from 16 feet to the 3-point line again this season, his efficiency will remain down.

Shooting percentages were down across the league to start last season after the NBA switched from Spalding to Wilson balls. Players were adjusting, and it took some time. THJ got plenty of corner and catch-and-shoot 3-pointers last season, but he did not knock them down. The Mavs need to feed him those looks this season because THJ is an above-league-average shooter.

Tim Hardaway Jr. thrived playing next to Luka Doncic in coach Carlisle’s system, and Kidd may have to lean into that pairing more to get THJ rolling. Number 77 can set the table for the 6’5 wing, and fans know he can knock down open looks.
