Thing casual fans need to know about the Dallas Mavericks: 4. Snails pace
The Mavs had the slowest pace in the NBA last season at 95.64 possessions per game. Luka plays at his own speed, and Dallas slowed things down further under head coach Jason Kidd. The Mavericks love operating in the half-court and letting number 77 go to work.
Their pace is slightly up this season, and they have moved out of the basement. Dallas averages 96.22 possessions per game, which is 29th in the NBA. They are not going to play fast. Fans will see them waste transition chances as they pull back to set up their offense. Luka Doncic is carving up defenses, so Dallas likes to play slow and avoid mistakes in transition whenever possible.
Playing slow eliminates highlight reel opportunities for Dallas. There are few chances for insane run-out dunks or special moves worthy of a place in the dunk contest. Luka Doncic had arguably the slam of the season for Dallas on Dec. 16.
The Dallas Mavericks will not be speeding up anytime soon. Expect them to be one of the slowest-paced teams in the league all season. Their half-court offense is one of the best, but Dallas is 23rd in points scored per game because of their pace.
