Shocking stat from Dallas Mavericks after 6 games: 3. Clutch woes

The Mavs have struggled late in nearly every game this season. It started with blowing a 15-point fourth-quarter lead against the Suns on opening night, and Dallas squandered a 16-point edge with four minutes to go against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Oct. 29. The Mavericks have won two of five games classified as clutch by NBA Stats, and the numbers behind those games are much worse.

Dallas is shooting 39.4 percent in clutch situations, and they have a negative-26.7 net rating. Five games covering 22 minutes is a tiny sample size, but the Mavericks just needed one more bucket to defeat both the Suns and Thunder, and they could not get it.

Teams are going to sell out to stop Luka Doncic in clutch situations. They will send double teams and try to force the ball out of his hands, which means other players need to step up and knock down open looks.

The defense in clutch situations has been worse than the offense. The Mavericks have struggled to get stops and their defensive rating over the 22 minutes sits at 131.6. Dallas simply has not got the job done late in close games, and this is something to watch closely moving forward.
