Will the Dallas Mavericks regret letting Jalen Brunson walk in free agency?

The Mavs will not totally regret letting Brunson go in free agency, but they should regret not giving him the extension. He will continue to improve in New York, but JB will not become an All-Star. The 26-year-old is a proven winner that may average 20 points per game at some point in his career. He is a piece of a championship puzzle, but not the second-best player.

The Knicks overpaid for JB in free agency, and the Mavericks have to move on. They have Spencer Dinwiddie and would love to add another ball-handler that can play off Luka Doncic before the trade deadline. They will miss Jalen Brunson this season, but Dallas should only regret letting him walk if he becomes a star in New York.

The Mavs could have traded Brunson at the deadline for at least a first-round pick, but that likely prevents them from reaching the conference finals. The front office gambled that they could convince JB to stay, and it did not happen.

The Dallas Mavericks should treat losing Jalen Brunson in free agency as a learning experience. They must lock in skilled players and stop chasing superstars. Dallas may get a star to join Luka Doncic, but they cannot bank on it. If given a redo, extend Brunson when first eligible and let him play his way into a value contract.
