What does Jalen Brunson need to do in New York to make Dallas Mavericks regret losing him?

Brunson doubled his value by becoming the Mavs' second-leading scorer and averaging over 21 points per game in the postseason as Dallas reached the conference finals. He went to New York in part to be the lead ball-handler, and Brunson will need to take another step forward if the Knicks want to make the playoffs in 2023.

If Brunson averages over 20 points in the Big Apple and leads the Knicks to the playoffs, the Mavs will regret letting him walk. The 26-year-old figured out how to play next to Luka Doncic, and he proved he could be a difference-maker in the playoffs. JB is a master at getting to his spots, and he is still improving.

The cap increase with the new television contract coming in 2025 will make Brunson’s salary look more manageable. The Mavericks are going to be over the cap for the foreseeable future with Luka Doncic on a max contract, so re-signing Brunson made sense as long as his contract had positive value on the trade market. JB needs to take another leap to make that a reality this season, but the 6’1 guard is capable of doing it.
