Winner from Dallas Mavericks 2022 preseason: Christian Wood
The Mavs traded a late first-round pick for Wood this offseason, and there were questions about how he would fit. Those grew louder when it became clear that the 6’10 forward was going to come off the bench. Wood averaged 19.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 1.0 block per game, and his goal is to be an All-Star this season. Would he accept his role and thrive in a winning environment?
Wood has done and said all the right things during training camp. He averaged 17.0 points and 8.3 rebounds in 22.5 minutes per game during the preseason, and Wood also made it clear that his focus is on winning games and playing his best. It has shown when he is on the court as the results have been strong so far.
Wood still needs to prove himself on the defensive end of the floor. The 6’10 forward has struggled mightily there throughout his career, and fans know head coach Jason Kidd preaches defense. The Mavs reached the conference finals last season on the strength of their D, and Wood needs to be better on that end of the floor.
Christian Wood proved he is going to be a difference-maker for the Dallas Mavericks this season. Can he push his way into the starting five and play over 30 minutes per game? It is one of the many storylines to watch this season.
