Loser from Dallas Mavericks 2022 preseason: Dwight Powell

Powell played in all 100 games last season, and he was the Mavs starting center in all 18 postseason games in their run to the conference finals. The 6’10 big man did not play massive minutes, but head coach Jason Kidd kept starting him for a reason.

The Mavericks signed JaVale McGee this offseason and immediately named him the team’s starting center. It was clear that he would cut into Powell’s opportunities, but does Dallas still have minutes for DP?

The 31-year-old started the preseason opener as McGee rested, but he was outside the team’s nightly rotation during the final two games. They started Dorian Finney-Smith next to McGee in the frontcourt with Christian Wood and Maxi Kleber as the two big men off the bench. It left Powell playing with the deep reserves and training camp invites.

McGee is a better version of DP at this point in their careers. Both are elite pick-and-roll partners for Luka Doncic, but McGee offers rim protection and rebounding that Powell cannot match. Fans should not expect Dwight Powell to be in the nightly rotation to begin the season, but he will be first in line if there is an injury.
