Dallas Mavericks closing lineup option: 2. Shooting and defense
If head coach Jason Kidd wants to maximize the defense in his closing lineup, Maxi Kleber is the clear choice over Christian Wood at the five. The 6’10 big man earned Kidd’s trust during their run to the conference finals last year, and he offers a unique blend of floor spacing and defense to any lineup. If Dallas also wants to maximize the shooting around number 77, this is the lineup for that.
PG: Luka Doncic
SG: Tim Hardaway Jr.
SF: Reggie Bullock
PF: Dorian Finney-Smith
C: Maxi Kleber
So far, Kleber is one of four players that has been part of the closing lineup in all five games for the Mavericks. The final position has rotated between Spencer Dinwiddie, THJ, and Christian Wood. Hardaway Jr. got the call against the Magic on Sunday night because he was hot, and Dallas closed out the close victory.
The 6’5 wing is a trusted shot-maker that makes it harder for defenses to sell out to stop Luka Doncic. Fans know number 77 will give the ball up if he gets double-teamed, and the opposition wants that in clutch time, so maximizing the floor spacing and shot-making around Luka could be massive for the offense.
This lineup will get looks in clutch time, but coach Kidd has preferred a different variation thus far.
