Dallas Mavericks closing lineup option: 3. Fan favorite
Most fans would prefer this lineup to finish a close game. It allows the Mavs to lean into the lineups that made them successful last season while adding in Christian Wood.
PG: Luka Doncic
SG: Spencer Dinwiddie
SF: Reggie Bullock
PF: Dorian Finney-Smith
C: Christian Wood
The Mavericks had their most success last season with two ball-handlers on the floor, and fans saw Dinwiddie hit some clutch shots after coming over from Washington at the trade deadline. He gives Doncic a bailout option and allows Dallas to have two shot-creators on the floor when the offense breaks down.
Adding Wood puts their three creators on the floor at the same time. They can pick and pop or roll with Dinwiddie on the weak side ready to attack a shifting defense. This unit maximizes the offensive creativity for Dallas but presents some defensive challenges.
Through the team’s first six games, coach Kidd has only used Doncic, Dinwiddie, and Wood on the floor together for 20 total minutes, and the team has a negative-40.1 net rating thus far. Their defense has been bad and the offense has been worse in the tiny sample.
Will Kidd use those three players together more as the season progresses? Yes, but the numbers need to pick up for him to consider this as his preferred closing lineup anytime soon.
