Dallas Mavericks 2022 offseason grade: Losing Jalen Brunson in free agency
The Mavs' 2022 offseason will be remembered for losing Brunson in free agency. It is the first thing the national media latches on to when discussing their summer. Brunson's departure comes before the team’s frontcourt improvements or how they are building the roster around Luka going forward.
The front office deserves all the blame for letting Brunson walk in free agency. It started back in 2017 when they failed to sign him to a contract that made the 6’1 guard a restricted free agent, and went through this offseason when they failed to give New York a second-round pick to create a trade exception out of the deal.
Instead, the Mavs let their second-best player walk in free agency, and they got nothing in return.
Dallas Mavericks grade for Jalen Brunson signing with the Knicks: F
It is difficult to earn an F, but this was a total failure. The Mavericks said all the right things, but they never even made JB a contract offer. They saw the Knicks clearing cap space and did nothing, but watch him leave for the Big Apple.
Losing your second-best player hurts, but it made it that much worse when the team gets zero return for a 26-year-old guard that keeps improving.
