Mistake Nico Harrison has made as Dallas Mavericks GM: 2. Signing THJ
Harrison’s first three moves as Mavs general manager were trading Josh Richardson, signing Reggie Bullock, and extending Tim Hardaway Jr. They were also the three biggest moves of the 2021 offseason for Dallas.
J-Rich had a down season in Dallas, and the team was ready to move on. The Mavs failed to get anything in return, but let us call that a neutral move.
Signing Bullock was a massive hit as he played a key role in the team’s run to the conference finals. The Mavericks need 3-and-D wings around superstar Luka Doncic, and Bullock fits perfectly.
THJ’s value has fluctuated widely during his time in Dallas. He was viewed as overpaid when the Mavericks acquired him from the Knicks in 2019, but the 6’5 wing earned a new deal with his outstanding play for two straight seasons. Less than one year into the four-year $75 million extension, the Mavs were shopping him.
His foot injury coupled with a poor season has eliminated his trade market, and Dallas is hoping he can rebuild his trade value with a strong season.
The Dallas Mavericks overpaid Tim Hardaway Jr., but they were wise to make it a declining scale contract. He makes $19.6 million this season, but that drops to $16.1 million in the final year of his deal. As his salary number goes down, THJ will only become more tradeable.
