What do Dallas Mavericks still need after Christian Wood trade? 1. Re-sign Brunson

Jalen Brunson became a full-time starter this year. The 6’1 guard led the Mavs to two wins in the first three games of their first-round series against the Utah Jazz without Luka Doncic before he averaged over 21 points per game throughout their run to the conference finals. Brunson's fourth-year breakout earned him a massive payday in free agency.

All signs point to JB re-signing with the Mavericks, but he holds all the cards. Brunson is an unrestricted free agent that is free to sign with any team. Dallas is over the luxury tax line before re-signing him, so their options will be limited in replacing him if Brunson decides to leave.

The Mavs need to sign Jalen Brunson to a long-term deal this summer. Bringing back the 6’1 guard was GM Nico Harrison’s top priority heading into the offseason, and the front office knows their roster is likely to a step backward if he leaves.

Next. Trade grade: Mavs acquire Christian Wood. dark

The Dallas Mavericks want to re-sign Jalen Brunson and Theo Pinson this summer. They are hoping to add another 3-and-D wing and a rim protector to round out their roster heading into the 2022-2023 season. Christian Wood gives them a stretch five that could play his best basketball in Dallas. The Mavs improved by trading four non-rotation players for the 6’10 big man, but their offseason work is not done yet.
