What do Dallas Mavericks still need after Christian Wood trade? 4. Depth

The Mavs are hoping they added their starting center in the postseason from this deal. Wood can space the floor, rebound, and get buckets, but he has struggled mightily on the defensive end of the floor. Unless it improves, teams will hunt him in the postseason by dragging him onto the perimeter.

Assuming Wood’s defense improves, this trade gives Dallas one more rotation piece in the postseason, but they are still a little short. Head coach Jason Kidd only had six trusted rotation players in the 2022 postseason, and it forced him to rely heavily on each of those players.

Tim Hardaway Jr. is still under contract and would have helped the Mavericks in the postseason, but he was out with a foot injury. The 6’5 wing could be traded this summer, but he will likely be their sixth man if he sticks on the roster and Jalen Brunson gets re-signed.

Adding Wood and THJ gives Kidd eight trusted options in the postseason, but the Mavericks would like to have more depth. They need other pieces they can turn to off the bench that can change the game if the matchup is not going their way.

The Dallas Mavericks improved their talent in the Christian Wood trade, but they need more depth to make another deep playoff run in 2023.
