Are the Dallas Mavericks too limited around Luka Doncic?

Dallas Mavericks struggle late in games because teams take Luka Doncic out of the equation

Doncic can beat any defense, including when the opposition sends multiple players, but it takes energy. Teams love to mix up the coverages in an attempt to wear number 77 down for the stretch run. So far that has worked.

He leads the league in scoring at 33.6 points per game, and he is the NBA’s top first-quarter scorer averaging 12.4 points on 52.7 percent shooting from the field. Doncic’s shooting goes up to 53.3 percent in the second quarter before dropping to 47.9 percent in the third and 36.4 percent in the final period.

Luka simply runs out of gas by the end of the game, and teams are still sending two players and trying to force him to give the ball up. Nine of the team’s 11 games have been considered clutch by NBA Stats, and the Mavericks are shooting 38.0 percent from the field in those situations. It is a small sample, but one that shows Dallas struggles on both ends of the floor as team’s takeaway their best player.

The Dallas Mavericks need to take some of the burden off Luka Doncic’s plate, and they need to find him more help. It is that simple. Some of it would be helped by his current teammate's sinking open shots, but Luka is doing too much right now too. Dallas cannot rely on number 77 scoring 35 a night and dishing out nine dimes to win, so here is a look at two potential fixes.
