Are the Dallas Mavericks too limited around Luka Doncic?

The Dallas Mavericks are trying to build an annual title contender around superstar Luka Doncic. They have the most difficult piece to acquire, but the supporting cast around him is questionable. Dallas reached the conference finals last season by upsetting the top-seeded Suns before losing Jalen Brunson in free agency.

The Mavs had their most success with two ball handlers on the floor last season, so it was surprising to see them let JB walk. Now, Dallas has just Spencer Dinwiddie that can handle the ball and make plays. The rest of the roster is limited in creating shots, and it has caused some early-season problems.

The rest of the league is noticing too as Kevin Durant and Kyle Kuzma both called out the Mavericks over the last week. Here is a look at their comments before looking closer at the roster to decide if they are too limited around number 77.

The Mavs beat the Brooklyn Nets for the second time this season on Nov. 7 in a low-scoring slugfest. After the game, Kevin Durant said this about why he was guarding Luka Doncic so close late in the game.

"I mean, we are denying him. That is what you do to good scorers. I mean, we let the other guys play. They don’t really know how to dribble or create for themselves, so I felt like that slowed the game down for them as well. So any chance we got, try to deny him the ball and try to make his life tough, but he’s such a great player that they’ll figure it out."

Those are damning words coming from an all-time great, but he is right so far. The Mavs have struggled to create offense outside of Luka. That is why his usage percentage is among the highest in NBA history.

Kyle Kuzma shared this about Luka and the Mavericks after the Wizards upset Dallas without their two best players on Thursday night.

"We know that their team is very limited outside of him. Obviously with Christian Wood out, a big-time player. The ball was going to be in his hands the whole time."

Kuzma also discussed how Washington schemed against Doncic to slow him down on Thursday night. Luka is special, but he cannot win the games by himself. Are the Dallas Mavericks too limited around him?
