Dallas Mavericks have a history of striking out in free agency

Missing on their top target has happened to the Mavericks for years. It goes back over a decade at this point. They wanted Deron Williams to team with Dirk back in 2012 after blowing up the title team, but he decided to stay in Brooklyn.

That started a string of misses that included Dwight Howard in 2013 and Carmelo Anthony in 2014, but 2015 brought a new level of hurt to the situation for Mavericks fans. DeAndre Jordan agreed to come to Dallas that summer only to change his mind and return to the LA Clippers. Reports surfaced he was joining the Mavericks, and then, he did not come.

Nothing has changed in the Luka Doncic era. They wanted Marc Gasol in 2020, but he decided to join the Los Angeles Lakers. Last year, it was Kyle Lowry, who went to the Miami Heat in a sign-and-trade.

Brunson signing in New York provided a new level of pain. Now, the Mavericks not only miss out on free agents, but they cannot even keep their own. It brought back memories of Steve Nash in 2004. Dallas misplayed their hand, and it left supporters disappointed again.
