The Dallas Mavericks jumped out to massive leads in each of their first two games of the 2022-23 season, but they had extremely different endings. The Suns stormed back in the season opener to hand Dallas a disappointing loss, but the Mavs bounced back to dominate the Grizzlies in their home opener.
Superstar Luka Doncic has been outstanding, but it is still a small sample size. Things are not even trends yet. They are just events to watch and monitor as the season progresses.
With a massive four-game week ahead, here is a look back at the good, the bad, and the ugly from the Mavericks' first two games of the season.
Good from Dallas Mavericks first 2 games: Defense
Head coach Jason Kidd has preached defense since being hired as head coach in the summer of 2021. Dallas jumped from 21st to seventh in defensive rating last season, and it sparked their run to the conference finals. The Mavs are going to defend first, and trust that Luka can create enough points for them to win when the games matter most.
Dallas held the Suns to just 45 first-half points in the opener before relaxing coming out of the break. They were not going to repeat that in game two as the intensity stayed up, and Memphis scored just 96 points in the game.
The Mavs have a 103.6 defensive rating through two games, which sits third in the NBA. They have been fantastic on this end of the floor, and Dallas has demonstrated their potential as they look to jump into title contention.
