Free agent Dallas Mavericks should target after Christian Wood trade: 2. Nicolas Batum

Batum has a $3.2 million player option that he will almost certainly decline to become an unrestricted free agent. All signs point to the 33-year-old wing re-signing with the Clippers following his opt-out, and LA would be able to offer significantly more money than the Mavs because they will hold his early Bird rights, but the Clippers already have $171 million in committed salary, so re-sign Batum will be costly for owner Steve Ballmer.

Batum would be the perfect addition for the Mavericks. The 6’8 forward can handle the ball, make plays, rebound, defend multiple positions, and space the floor. He is the ultimate role player that just makes his team better. Batum has shot over 40 percent from 3-point range for two straight years, and he fills whatever role necessary on both ends of the floor.

Fans saw his postseason impact when the Mavericks faced the Clippers in the first round in 2021. He defended Luka Doncic, rebounded well, and made some key plays on both ends of the floor. The 33-year-old just makes his team better.

Do not expect the LA Clippers to let him get away, but Nicolas Batum would be a fantastic addition for the Dallas Mavericks, and their front office should be calling and offering the full taxpayer mid-level to try to pry him away from LA.
