Free agent Dallas Mavericks should target after Christian Wood trade: 5. Bruce Brown Jr.
Brown is in a similar situation to Jalen Brunson. The 25-year-old guard was a second-round by the Detroit Pistons in 2018, and he heads into unrestricted free agency after making just over $8 million on his rookie contract. The Nets have his Bird Right, and the 25-year-old wing is searching for a payday.
Brown averaged 9.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 steals in 24.6 minutes per game last season. He showed he can start or come off the bench, defend multiple positions, and guard the opposition’s best scorer.
NBA Stats matchup data says the six players Brown guarded most were Darius Garland, Khris Middleton, RJ Barrett, Jimmy Butler, Trae Young, and Zach LaVine or five All-Stars and a 22-year-old that just scored 20 points per game. Brown plays physical defense and does not shy away from difficult matchups.
His offensive game is still developing, but the 6’4 wing shot 50.6 percent from the field and hit 40.4 percent of his 94 3-point attempts during the 2021-2022 season. Brown will continue working on his jumper, but he does not command the ball. The 25-year-old is comfortable playing impactful defense and capitalizing when left wide open.
The Dallas Mavericks made a massive defensive improvement under head coach Jason Kidd, and they are looking to add another stout defender like Bruce Brown in free agency.
