Free agent point guard Dallas Mavericks could still sign: 3. Elfrid Payton

Payton is another former top ten pick that remains available. The 28-year-old was a starting point guard for the first seven years of his NBA career before signing with the Suns last season to back up Chris Paul. Payton played just 11.0 minutes per game in Phoenix and his numbers do not jump off the screen.

The veteran is a traditional point guard. He is a strong playmaker that holds his own defensively, but his scoring is a work in progress. Payton can use his speed and quickness to get to the rim, but he is a career 28.7 percent 3-point shooter on 662 attempts.

Payton needs the ball in his hands to be a threat. He would be able to organize the second unit, but the 28-year-old is not going to command the ball over Luka Doncic or Spencer Dinwiddie. His lack of shooting would limit his playing time, and ultimately, the Dallas Mavericks would be searching for an upgrade at the trade deadline.

Elfrid Payton could help a team that needs a playmaker and distributor to organize their second unit. He is not the perfect fit in Dallas, but that does not mean the veteran point guard will be out of work this season. Expect Payton to get a shot from a team needing a veteran point guard.
