Why Dallas Mavericks fans should watch EuroBasket 2022: 3. Dirk’s jersey retirement

The Mavs retired Dirk Nowitzki’s number 41 jersey on an emotional night in January, and now his number 14 jersey Germany will be lifted to the rafters. The retirement is set to happen on Sept. 1 as Germany hosts France to open the tournament.

Dirk is the first German ever to have his jersey retired. He led them to the bronze medal at the World Cup in 2002 and the silver at EuroBasket in 2005, and that makes zero mention of his NBA accolades. Nowitzki is not only the Mavericks GOAT but the greatest German basketball player. He is more than deserving of this massive honor.

Dallas Mavericks fans will get to see plenty of Dirk Nowitzki, but the Sept. 1 opener featuring his jersey retirement will be a cannot miss event. The 44-year-old will likely address the supporters in his home country, and it will be another emotional day for MFFLs worldwide.

Germany vaulted into sleeper status after dominating Slovenia in World Cup qualifying on Aug. 28. Dennis Schroder and Franz Wagner led the way for the Germans, and they will be looking to put on a show for Dirk Nowitzki as they host EuroBasket 2022. German success will only make the tournament that much sweeter for Dirk and Mavs fans worldwide.
