Why Dallas Mavericks fans should watch Spain vs. Finland in EuroBasket 2022 quarterfinals
Lauri Markkanen alone makes this a must-watch game. The Finnish forward is the third leading scorer in the tournament thus far, and he is coming off a 43-point performance in their round of 16 victory over Croatia to get here.
Markkanen is leading Finland into uncharted waters. They have never finished higher than sixth in EuroBasket, and that was the only time they have been among the top eight teams. Finland finished second in Group D, but they were upset by Israel at the start of the tournament. Nobody expected them to be in the quarters following that game, but the Finnish believe they can keep things going.
Spain has been the class of the European field for the last decade, but most of those players have retired or are injured. Rudy Fernandez is the last piece left from their incredible run, but he led Spain right back into the quarters after they won Group A and knocked off Lithuanian in the round of 16.
Lorenzo Brown and the Hernangomez brothers will play key roles for Spain as they look to finish in the top four for the 11th consecutive EuroBasket. The Spanish finished fifth in 1997, but they have not been outside the top four since, including winning nine medals.
Will Lauri Markkanen be too much or does Spain get back into the final four? Expect a tight battle with a spot in the semifinals on the line, and fans won’t want to miss it.
