Dallas Mavericks need to take advantage of corner 3s versus Timberwolves
Minnesota has jumped from 28th in defensive rating to 11th by switching their defensive scheme. The Timberwolves played Karl-Anthony Towns in drop coverage last season, but they have switched to a more aggressive style that has them searching for turnovers and sprinting around the floor.
Teams have started to figure it out, and the Timberwolves have backed down the aggression in recent weeks. It will be interesting to see how they try to play against the Mavericks. Luka Doncic is a master at hunting mismatches. If Minnesota decides to play drop coverage with Towns or switch pick and rolls, Doncic will feast. Expect the Timberwolves to up the aggression, but it will result in open corner 3-pointers.
Reggie Bullock is set to return for the Mavericks, and not a moment too soon. Expect Bullock, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Maxi Kleber to feast from the corners in the two meetings against the Timberwolves. If those three are knocking down shots, Dallas should dominate the matchups. Minnesota closes out strong, so Bullock’s quick release could be the key to the Mavs success.
Luka Doncic is one of the best passers in the league, and he never misses an open corner 3-point shooter. It will be interesting to see how the Timberwolves attempt to deal with that in the two meetings.
