Dallas Mavericks depth chart at center
The Mavericks only have two traditional centers, and both are likely to play limited minutes this season.
Starter: JaVale McGee
McGee gives Dallas a true rim protector. They did not have anyone that deterred opponents from attacking inside during their run to the conference finals. McGee averaged 9.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks in 15.8 minutes per game for the Suns last season.
Head coach Jason Kidd has preferred to start the game big before shifting to playing small. Expect him to do that again with McGee in the opening five, but he will likely be limited to 15-20 minutes per game.
Backup: Dwight Powell
Powell started 71 regular-season games and all 18 playoff contests last season. He is a strong roll man, but his role will be diminished this season. The Mavericks could look to trade his $11 million expiring contract this offseason or for an upgrade at the deadline.
Christian Wood and Maxi Kleber will see plenty of minutes at the five as head coach Jason Kidd goes small to space the floor. He does not want to overtax them during the long 82-game regular season, but they will slide down for significant minutes in the postseason as the Mavs play their best lineups.
The Dallas Mavericks have already plugged some holes in their roster, and they are not done. Who do they add next? Stay tuned.
