Dallas Mavericks center depth chart after flashy guard signing
The Mavs added JaVale McGee this summer and immediately named him the starting center. The seven-footer replaces Dwight Powell, who dropped to third string with Christian Wood also coming in.
Starter: JaVale McGee
McGee will start, but fans should expect him to play less than 20 minutes per game. The seven-footer will protect the rim and give Luka Doncic a serious lob threat, but the 34-year-old has played over 20 minutes per game just three times in his 14-year NBA career.
Sixth Man: Christian Wood
Wood is the team’s biggest X factor this season. Doncic will be fantastic when the games matter most, but can C-Wood contribute to a winning team?
The 6’10 forward averaged 19.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 1.0 block per game during his two seasons in Houston, but the Rockets had one of the worst records in the league. Wood has never played in the playoffs, and he needs to translate his game into a winning environment. That will start on the defensive end, but is Wood up for the challenge? So far, so good, but stay tuned to see if that lasts.
Third string: Dwight Powell
Powell will be the third-string center this season, and the team will likely look to trade his expiring contract before the deadline. DP is a fantastic roll man, but he has struggled on the defensive end since having his Achilles repaired in Jan. 2020.
The Dallas Mavericks are a deeper and more versatile team this season, even after losing Jalen Brunson in free agency. Will it result in another deep playoff run? Tune in to find out.
