Dallas Mavericks small forward depth chart after flashy guard signing
The two and three positions can be pushed together on nearly every depth chart across the league. Reggie Bullock earned the starting gig during last season’s playoff run, but Josh Green will battle Ntilikina, Hardy, Pinson, and Hardaway Jr. for minutes off the bench.
Starter: Reggie Bullock
The Mavs want shooters and defenders around Luka Doncic, and Bullock fits that mold to a T. Head coach Jason Kidd rarely took him off the floor in the playoffs because he can defend the opposition’s lead ball-handler and knock down open 3-pointers at a high clip. Expect Bullock to play 30-plus minutes per game during the regular season and that number to expand in the playoffs.
Backup: Josh Green
Green put in a ton of work this summer, and it showed during training camp. The 21-year-old improved his shooting form, ball-handling ability, and gained confidence as he looks to have a breakout third NBA season. Fans know the 6’5 wing will bring the energy and defense, but can he consistently knock down 3-pointers?
Third string: Theo Pinson
Pinson won’t be part of the rotation, but he brings energy from the bench. The NBA created a rule this offseason because of what Pinson did in last year’s playoffs. Expect to hear him plenty this season as he looks to help the Mavs in any way possible.
