Crazy trade for Dallas Mavericks to land a second star to pair with Luka Doncic: 5. Acquire Ayton
Deandre Ayton is a restricted free agent this summer after the Suns failed to get an extension done last offseason. There are rumblings the 23-year-old former number one overall pick has played his last game for Phoenix, but Mavericks fans should not get too excited.
Dallas pulling off any sign-and-trade is difficult because they would be hard-capped and unable to spend more than $155.6 million. With Luka’s max extension kicking in, Dallas has $151.5 million committed in salaries before re-signing Jalen Brunson. The Mavs will have to dump contracts to pull off a sign-and-trade.
A deal for Ayton could look something like this.
Dallas would need to get a third team involved to take on some salary. Would Oklahoma City be willing to acquire Davis Bertans for a first-round pick? Is Tim Hardaway Jr. and two firsts enough to land Ayton? The Thunder would likely do this trade, but the Suns would want more.
Fans should not expect the Dallas Mavericks to pull off any sign-and-trades this summer. They are looking to improve their depth, and hard-capping themselves would almost certainly force Dallas to trade out pieces in salary dumps.
Deandre Ayton continues to improve, but he is not a superstar yet. The Mavericks could have interest in the 23-year-old big man, but finding a sign-and-trade that works for both sides will be nearly impossible.
