Bargain bin free-agent center Dallas Mavericks should target: 2. JaVale McGee
Former Maverick JaVale McGee has been a role player on three championship teams, including the 2020 Lakers that featured Jason Kidd as an assistant coach. The seven-footer averaged 9.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks in 15.8 minutes per game as the Suns' backup big man behind Deandre Ayton.
McGee is a strong screen setter and pick and roll partner where he averaged 1.40 points per possession this season, which ranked in the top 11 percent of the league. The 34-year-old rolls hard to the rim and would get plenty of lobs from Luka Doncic.
McGee is another big man that would play a larger role during the regular season before having his playing time scaled back in the playoffs. He would improve the Mavs rebounding and rim protection, while not commanding the ball on the offensive end of the floor.
JaVale McGee’s first stint in Dallas did not go as planned, but things are different now. Rick Carlisle is in Indiana, and McGee has experience playing under coach Kidd. The 34-year-old is the perfect veteran backup big man for the Mavericks. He has won three championships and can offer quality minutes whenever his name gets called.
