Offseason goal for Dallas Mavericks after Christian Wood trade: 4. Defensive improvements

The Mavs finished 21st in defensive rating in the final seasons under longtime head coach Rick Carlisle before vaulting to seventh under Jason Kidd. The Hall of Fame point guard brought in a new scheme and got the players to buy in. Dallas added Reggie Bullock last summer, and their returning players committed to playing defense.

Dallas won two postseason series because of their defense. They held the Jazz to 100 or fewer points in four of the six games before forcing the Suns to produce their three lowest-scoring games of the season in the second round. Luka Doncic will make sure the Mavericks score, but they must get stops to be title contenders.

The Mavericks need internal growth on this end of the floor, and it starts with Luka Doncic. Teams were hunting him in the playoffs. They would get the 23-year-old superstar involved in every pick and roll as they looked to attack. Doncic made significant strides in year one under coach Kidd, and he has to make another leap this offseason.

The Dallas Mavericks will not just rely on internal growth as they look to further improve their defense in the 2022-2023 season.
