Biggest focus points for Dallas Mavericks in training camp: 2. Chemistry
Luka Doncic signed a massive five-year extension with the Mavs this offseason. During the press conference announcing his new deal, the 22-year-old had this to say after being asked about what say he wants in building the team going forward.
"I know we made some great moves in the free agency, but I think one of the most important things to win is chemistry that the team has off the court. For example, in Slovenia, we had amazing chemistry the whole time, and I think that lead us to winning games. I think that is what we need in Dallas."- Luka Doncic
Mavs appeared to have that type of chemistry in 2020, but things soured last season. The Athletic reported in June about plenty of turmoil inside the organization, which owner Mark Cuban denied. Fans remarked about the lack of on-court communication between Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis as it was clear that it was not all sunshine and rainbows for the Mavs during a difficult season packed with health and safety protocols.
Regardless, Luka is looking for the chemistry to improve this season, and head coach Jason Kidd should be trying to build it from the first practice. Luka and KP used to do shooting drills after nearly every workout during training camp in 2019. Getting the two stars back into that routine could set an example for others to follow and get everyone spending time together.
The Dallas Mavericks need that chemistry to climb into the top four in the Western Conference this season. Hopefully, Jason Kidd and his coaching staff can help the roster build it during training camp.
