Dallas Mavericks biggest question heading into season: 1. Can KP be the second star?
The Mavs' biggest question is what can they expect from Kristaps Porzingis? The 7’3 big man was phenomenal during the Walt Disney World bubble where he averaged 28.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks over nine games before suffering a meniscus tear. KP struggled to get healthy and did not return to that level last season.
It is now or never for Porzingis. If he does not produce like the second star the Mavs need, the front office will have zero choice but to try to move him. Head coach Jason Kidd is excited about working with the Unicorn because he believes he can help him return to his All-Star form.
Were his struggles last season injury-related? Did a healthy offseason fix KP’s defensive issues? Can he average 20 points and nine rebounds per game, while taking another small step forward in his shooting efficiency? The Mavericks need him to do all that if they plan on contending for a title this season.
The Dallas Mavericks will be one of the most exciting and entertaining teams to watch in the 2021-2022 campaign. Luka Doncic is worth the price of admission alone, but can the team sort out these questions and go on a deep playoff run? Stay tuned.
