The Mavs had the best offense in the NBA in 2020 but finished 18th in defensive rating as they were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. Dallas traded for Josh Richardson in hopes he was the missing piece that would vault Dallas into a top ten defense. Expect Jason Kidd to adjust the scheme as they continue to try to improve the personnel around Luka Doncic. Dallas still lacks a true perimeter defensive stopper, but Kidd was an assistant in LA the last two seasons as the Lakers were one of the best team's on this end of the floor.
Fans should be looking for defensive changes early and often during the preseason. How high will the Dallas Mavericks’ defense climb in their first season under Jason Kidd? Stay tuned.
