Dallas Mavericks biggest question heading into season: 5. Who takes final roster spot?
The Mavs appeared to have their 15-man regular-season roster set before signing Frank Ntilikina on Sept. 16. It is still unclear whether his contract is guaranteed, but the four-year NBA veteran gives Dallas another strong perimeter defender to use off the bench.
To keep Frankie Smokes, the Mavericks will have to make a roster move. Do they release Tyrell Terry or Trey Burke, who both have multiple seasons left on their contracts? Can Dallas pull off a two-for-one trade to clear their roster crunch? Is Willie Cauley-Stein on the chopping block because he is in the final year of his deal? The battle for the final roster spot will be something to watch closely during training camp.
Ntilikina played the fewest games and minutes of his NBA career last season, but he was 23 of 48 from 3-point range. If the 23-year-old can play stout perimeter defense and shoot a league-average rate from beyond the arc, he can find minute playing off Luka Doncic. Will his training camp performance be enough to keep him around for the regular season?
The battle for the final roster position is far from the only things Dallas Mavericks fans should be watching during training camp.
