Dallas Mavericks position battle heading into training camp: 3. Final closer
The Mavs closing lineup will be a work-in-progress. Last season, 15 players earned minutes in clutch time as defined by NBA Stats. Their most used lineup when healthy featured Luka Doncic, Kristaps Porzingis, Dorian Finney-Smith, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Josh Richardson. With J-Rich in Boston, who takes over in the clutch?
Reggie Bullock seems like the obvious answer, but Dallas has options. Jalen Brunson would give the Mavs more ball-handling and playmaking when every bucket matters. Coach Kidd could opt for more defensive versatility with Maxi Kleber. Could Bullock, Brunson, or Kleber supplant one of the Mavericks' four closers from last season?
Dallas played 33 clutch games last season and had the tenth-highest winning percentage in the league at 54.5 percent. They will be looking to take another step forward in that area this season. Reggie Bullock is the favorite to fill in because of his shooting and defense, but matchups and situations will play a factor. Do not be surprised to see Kidd ride a hot hand or decide on Kleber or another big man to better defend the opposition.
There is a bit of clarity in the closing lineup, but the starting five remains a bit more uncertain.
