Dallas Mavericks position battle heading into training camp: 4. Reserve wing minutes
The Mavs gave Reggie Bullock a three-year contract worth $30-plus million. He is the favorite to start and play 30-plus minutes on the wing. They also re-signed Tim Hardaway Jr. to an even larger contract. The pair figures to start next to Luka Doncic, but there will be a battle for who plays behind them.
New addition Sterling Brown will be fighting Jalen Brunson, Josh Green, Trey Burke, and Tyrell Terry for time. If Luka plays 35 minutes a night, that will leave just 13 for Brunson as the backup point guard. He will need to slide down to the two for the remainder of his 25 or so each game. That leaves about 25 additional minutes to split between Brown, Green, Burke, and Terry.
Will someone grab all of those? Does coach Kidd split them between multiple players each game? The Mavs would love to find playing time for 2020 first-round pick Josh Green. Can he beat out new acquisition Sterling Brown for the minutes? Brown offers more shooting and floor spacing. Will Green’s energy and effort outweigh Brown’s offensive impact?
This position battle will be fascinating to watch because it hinges on Josh Green’s development. How much better has the 20-year-old gotten this offseason? Stay tuned during training camp to find out.
