Dallas Mavericks position battle heading into training camp: 5. Backup center
New Mavs head coach Jason Kidd has some important decisions to make about his starting lineup. Will Kristaps Porzingis be the four or the five? Who starts next to him? Those are unanswered questions right now, but Luka Doncic, Tim Hardaway Jr., Dorian Finney-Smith, Reggie Bullock, and KP figure to be the top-five minutes-getters this season. That puts Porzingis at the five for significant stretches each game.
The question becomes who earns the remaining minutes at the position. The Mavericks have Dwight Powell, Willie Cauley-Stein, Boban Marjanovic, and Moses Brown all fighting for the final ten to 17 minutes per game in the Mavericks rotation.
This battle is complicated because there are so many names and possibilities. Coach Kidd will be looking for pairings that work but has options to just play the matchups as Rick Carlisle did last season. Moses Brown was not part of the mix, but Carlisle decided on a nightly basis which player gave Dallas the best chance to win and went with him.
This position battle is one of the most interesting because fans can make a case that all four players deserve minutes, but there will only be enough in the rotation for one of them. Can someone take over during camp and earn the nightly role? It is something to watch.
